Build Your Tribe: The Importance of Community

At Rivvly, we believe that your vibe attracts your tribe– and we sure have attracted a pretty awesome tribe!

We’ve built a team of supportive, hardworking, dedicated, empowered, and inspiring women and men. Community is something that’s at the core of Rivvly’s values, and it should be pretty important to you too! Here’s why...

Environment

Research has shown that our environment has a serious impact on who we are as a person. The people you surround yourself with have an affect on the way that you think and behave. Create an environment with people who possess qualities that you admire and would like to pick up yourself. Surround yourself with people who are making moves in their career that you’d like to mirror. And finally, surround yourself with people who’d you look to for advice.

For example, when I think about the women on Rivvly’s leadership team, I see women who are successful in their careers and living lives that they love while creating an environment that empowers others to do the same. Those are the type of women that I want to be like; they are creating a community that I am so grateful to be a part of.

If you’re unsure if this is a helpful community to surround yourself with, try asking yourself the hard questions; ‘Do the people currently in my tribe add value to my life?” Give yourself about a week to think on it, and the answer *honestly*. You may find there are some changes you need to make, but remember– that’s a GOOD thing!

If you’re actively looking for a new job, don’t be afraid to ask about the community/culture aspect of your prospective team and company. If you're already in a leadership role, or maybe you are a founder of a startup-- does the environment of your community actually reflect what you say it is? A great way to test this is to ask your team!

Creative Energy

Community is also a place to foster creativity– or as we say at Rivvly– it’s where the creative magic happens.

Oxford Scholar Theodore Zeldin said, “Conversation is a meeting of minds with different memories and habits. When minds meet, they don’t just exchange facts: they transform them, reshape them, draw different implications from them, engage in new trains of thought. Conversation doesn’t just reshuffle the cards: it creates new cards.” And that’s exactly what happens when our team of unicorns engages in conversation at Rivvly. We challenge each other to reach new heights in our careers and to grow personally as well.

When is the last time you felt the energy from a brainstorming session? Are there open opportunities for creative conversation within your team now? If not, try striking up the conversation. Don’t ever be afraid to ask ‘why’!

Motivation

A strong community can not only support you but also help motivate, push, and drive you in the direction of making your career and personal life as successful, inspiring, and motivating as possible.

This is especially important when you’re experiencing a low or going through a particularly difficult season. Having a community that willingly helps pull you through, lifts you up, and allows grace makes all the difference in your success– both personally and professionally.

Your community can also provide motivation by offering different perspectives. If you surround yourself with people who have varying ideas and opinions, a trusted tribe member may offer a solution you had not previously explored and spark whole new avenues of growth and inspiration!

Health

Creating community has a profound effect on your health. Studies have shown that there are a number of health benefits that result from placing yourself in a strong community. Many have been known to experience less stress, more happiness, greater contentment, and less chance of chronic health issues such as depression or anxiety.

Before I found a strong sense of community at Rivvly, I was beginning to find myself extremely unmotivated. Stress began to consume me, causing me to develop extreme sleep issues. Because I wasn’t sleeping well, I rarely felt motivated to get out of bed. The combination of all of these stressors slowly drove me into a mild depression, and I had no one to pull me out of it...until I found my Rivvly tribe, that is!

Take this as a challenge to reflect on, appreciate, adjust, or start building your tribe now! Continue to pour into those relationships that are positively adding to both your personal life and career. Continue seeking out relationships that will drive you to new heights. You never know what greatness you’ll be able to achieve when you have the right support system behind you, and, speaking from experience, it’s life changing!
